KICK THE CAN
By Coach Lorne McAlister
The two story house at 10819 - 111 Avenue in Edmonton is gone. Four lots now have a temporary chainlike fence around them and the sign on the corner of 109th Street and 111th Avenue reads “Buy or Lease - Build to suit”.
That’s where I used to live. I slept in one of the two upstairs bedrooms in a double bed with my grandpa Samuel Owen Kendrick. In the 1950’s Peter V, Peter M, Ronnie R and I terrorized this neighborhood.
It was down the back alley from that home that I walked to McDougall Elementary School. The back alley was my preferred route to my favorite playground which unfortunately was attached to my school. It was up and down that alley that I’d always find something, often an empty can, to kick to school and to kick back home again.
Kicking a can is a lot different than kicking a ball. You’re not quite sure where the can is going. Kicking a can is definitely not an efficient route to anywhere. You’ve got to go where the can goes, kicking and zigzagging your way to your destination. But can-kickers know this fact, you just keep kicking the can and suddenly you’re home, voila, there’s the baseball diamond, the soccer field, the swings, the teeter totter and school.
Life is never a straight-line trip. The adventure tour has lots of detours, sudden stops and surprises along the way. It’s like the trail I left when I kick the can down the alley to McDougall Elementary School.
YOU CAN KICK YOUR CAN ANYWHERE!
“You never know what you can do until you try.” English Proverb
“We can have either the future we choose or the future we allow.” Andrew Leveris
YOU CAN KICK YOUR CAN ANYWHERE!
- What would you like to do?
- What would you like to become?
- Where would you like to go?
You can do it. You can become it. You can get there. You’ll have to kick-the-can all the way. As long as you keep kicking the I-can-do-it can, you will get there.
You have to kick your own can. When it comes to can-kicking, it’s like nose blowing, you have to do it yourself.
“You can’t push anyone up a ladder unless they are willing to climb a little.” Andrew Carnegie.
IT CAN BE DONE AND YOU CAN DO IT SO START KICKING THE CAN!
WHEN?
“It’s never too late to be what you might have been .” George Eliot
WHY?
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
BUT, I CAN'T!
“Pessimists need a kick in the can’t.” Mary Katherine
If can be done, and you can do it. Make up your minds that you can and then KICK THAT CAN until it happens. This will keep you on target. Scrounge through the garbage and rescue an empty can. Now slap a label on it that describes the change, the goal, the preferred future you are committed to. Put it in a powerful place in your world to constantly remind you that you are committed to KICK THE CAN.
When it comes to can-kicking, a life coach is very helpful. Call me. I will keep you on target, on time, on track and I will do that by holding you accountable to KICK THE CAN.
